Book Review of The Little Book of Big Knowing: Tiny Bursts of Insight to Wake Up the Soul
By Michele Sammons
Spiritual, Self-Help
138 pages, 2020
Looking for a lighter take on deep subjects all wrapped up in a hug? Just as glimmers of sunlight coax flowers to bloom, The Little Book of Big Knowing: Tiny Bursts of Insight to Wake Up Your Soul reminds us who we are. Bring an open heart and a curious mind to Michele Sammons’ collection of word bursts designed to awaken you . . . to yourself.
Like champagne bubbles or pop rocks, the tiny bursts in The Little Book are best taken in small doses and savored. So enjoy the short sessions with each of the 100 write-ups like a sweet daily tonic. When you reach the end, you can start again. With tiny chapters that feature topics ranging from the cryptic “Neutral,” to the mundane “Acceptance,” and the directive, “Calm Down Already,” each written to the universal rather than the specific, you’ll glean what fits for you. Depending on where you’re at emotionally, in your professional endeavors, or personal life, the offered subjects will have varied meanings each time they’re read.
The magic of this book is that its insights spark your own. Then let your mind wander, maybe even taking notes. If you’re a planner, or journal user, count on Sammons’ words to prompt your own jottings. I haven’t done much journalling in the last several years, but this book got me thinking about my life, my past, my future, and who I am at the core. I may buy a journal and go through The Little Book of Big Knowing again and then jot down the thoughts that come to mind.
To connect with most audiences, The Little Book of Big Knowing uses God and the Universe somewhat interchangeably. It’s not a religious book per se, but Sammons does talk about the flowing source of love toward the reader. The book reflects that love through its caring, joyful tone.
Everything about The Little Book of Big Knowing, from the bright blue cover to its colorful, flower-like embellishment is fun. Parts of its whimsical embellishment accompany each of the chapter topics, adding graphic interest to every page. To me, these bits seem to represent the many sides to all of us—serious, playful, joyful, disciplined—and you’ll decide what each write-up means for you. That the pieces all come together in a radiant bloom reminds me of the many roles we fulfill in our busy, varied lives. Or, because the topics are universal, perhaps the fragmented patterns that come together illustrate unity between us all.
At a time when the whole world is emerging from the dark days of the Covid-19 pandemic, this book would make the perfect gift to encourage a friend. Or gift it to yourself. In a recent interview, the author said she wrote The Little Book of Big Knowing for the woman she used to be. Sammons lives in Tennessee, has a BA in International Relations, is a meditation teacher and a certified life coach with an intuitive, spiritual focus. She hopes her words will inspire and nourish readers’ spirits as they journey along on their various paths.
What I like best is opening to any page, reading for just a few seconds, and feeling encouraged, enlightened, and energized. Who doesn’t want a tiny burst of insight?
